Dialogue first, surround later: buying living-room audio in order
If the household keeps turning subtitles on because dialogue is difficult, start by assessing the television audio connection and a suitable front-speaker solution. Surround speakers answer a different wish and do not replace a sensible starting layout.

Start at the television port
Record the television model and the labels on its audio ports. A soundbar choice depends on the available connection and supported formats, so include those details before comparing speaker specifications or planning where rear units might sit.
Budget for placement
Check whether a front speaker would cover the screen or infrared receiver. Reserve power and stable positions for any later speakers. A larger component is not automatically the better fit for a shallow television cabinet.
Compare an upgrade path
Ask for a front-audio option and a later expansion option as separate lines. During a demonstration, use familiar speech content at your normal listening level instead of judging only by a loud action sequence.
