Renting? Build a living-room kit you can take with you
For a rental, start with portable lighting and controls rather than replacing wall devices. A reversible setup can make the current room more pleasant while preserving choices for the next home and its different wiring.

Keep the landlord boundary clear
List anything that needs screws, adhesive, wiring or a changed lock. Get the relevant permission before purchasing installation-specific accessories; a device described as wireless may still need a permanent mounting position or continuous power.
Buy around reusable pieces
A portable lamp and a physical dimmer can remain useful even if the next room is smaller. Buy a controller only when its role is clear, and retain packaging and setup credentials for an orderly move.
Ask for a move-out list
Request a small kit proposal that includes removal, account reset and restoration notes. Expanding one temporary room should not leave the landlord with unexplained devices or the next tenant with access to your accounts.
Before you buy
- Confirm mounting permission
- Preserve original fittings
- Plan account removal
