One room, two activities: lighting that stops the argument
Choose separate reading and television lighting zones before buying a larger fixture. The advantage is independent control: one person can keep a useful task light while the other dims the rest of the room.

Map seats to circuits
Draw the sofa, armchair and existing switches. Two switches on the same circuit do not create two lighting zones. A plug-in task lamp can create a practical second layer when rewiring is undesirable.
Compare control routes
A wall-dimmer plan suits compatible fixed lighting. A connected-lamp plan suits movable lighting. Keep each route within its own documented controller requirements rather than assuming two brands will share every scene feature.
Try simultaneous use
Request a list with two independently adjustable groups and a clear manual control for each. During a demonstration, read a real page while the television is on; that is more revealing than watching preset colors.
Before you buy
- Identify separate circuits
- Check glare from seats
- Label both controls
