Do Not Choose a Lighting Dimmer for a Ceiling Fan by Appearance
A fan motor and a dimmable light are different electrical loads. Choose a control explicitly suitable for the intended load, even when two wall products look almost identical.

Identify what the wire serves
Record whether the circuit supplies a light, motor or combined fixture. A homeowner’s description of the wall control may not reveal the equipment behind it, so include fixture model details.
Read the load rating
Ask the electrician to match the controller’s documented application and ratings. A maximum wattage for lighting is not permission to control every device drawing less electrical power than that number.
Split the quotation if needed
Where a fixture combines light and fan functions, request a supported arrangement for each function. A modest change in hardware can be preferable to buying an unsuitable all-in-one-looking wall product.
Before you buy
- Fixture and load type
- Explicitly approved control use
- Separate light and motor plan
