Another Smart Hub or Better Home Networking First?

A new automation hub does not automatically improve Wi-Fi coverage or repair a poor network layout. Identify which connection is failing before choosing the next box for the home.

Separate the networks

A device can have a problem reaching its hub while the hub has a separate problem reaching the home network. Record affected products, locations and the circumstances in which failures occur.

Check the difficult locations

Review basement, garage and distant-room connectivity at the final equipment positions. A centrally placed router may still leave difficult construction barriers, so a broad claim about house size does not settle the coverage question.

Buy the missing layer

Request a network assessment and a device-controller list before expanding. The best next purchase may be supported radio infrastructure or a better network path, rather than replacing equipment that already performs its own role correctly.

Before you buy

  • Failed connection path identified
  • Final-location network assessment
  • Existing hardware roles retained
