Accent Light or Reading Light? Avoid Buying the Wrong Kind of Comfort
An accent light can make a room feel calmer without becoming a useful reading lamp. Decide whether you are lighting a task or a surface before selecting the shape.

Identify the task
A book, kitchen counter and decorative wall need different light distribution. Describe where your eyes and the object will be, rather than choosing only from a lamp’s appearance in a styled photograph.
Check reflections
Look at screens, glossy surfaces and seating positions around the proposed lamp. A reflected wash can look attractive behind furniture while a directly visible bright source may become distracting during use.
Build two useful layers
Keep suitable task lighting and add a controlled background layer where it helps. Ask for a simple evening scene that preserves enough light for the activities the household actually enjoys.
