Freshly painted walls: choose the least disruptive useful upgrade
After decorating, choose an upgrade that solves a clear problem without assuming every wall device must change. Portable lights, compatible physical remotes or an assessed switch replacement can be compared on their actual installation work and daily usefulness.

Separate reversible from wired work
List each proposed change as movable, mounted or electrically installed. A wireless control may reduce one part of the work, but its lighting receiver or other companion equipment can still require a qualified installation review.
Inspect one representative box
If replacing wall controls is worthwhile, have the wiring, load and available box space assessed before ordering multiples. No-neutral compatibility is model-specific, and a neat wall plate does not answer those installation questions.
Buy a first-room scope
Request a one-room option with finish protection and any restoration work identified. The result gives you a more realistic basis for expanding than a large device purchase made before the first switch or lamp has been reviewed.
Before you buy
- Classify installation effort
- Assess one switch box
- Mark finish protection
