No C Wire at the Thermostat? Do Not Order an Adapter Blind
A missing common wire changes the installation discussion, but the answer depends on the whole HVAC wiring arrangement. Get the supported power solution identified before ordering the thermostat and accessories.

Show labels, not just colors
Record the terminal labels at the existing thermostat and have the equipment-side connections assessed where necessary. Wire color by itself is not a reliable basis for selecting a new thermostat power arrangement.
Use the compatibility process
The manufacturer’s checker and installation guidance help determine whether a particular approved adapter method applies. Different HVAC systems and thermostat models can require different treatment, so avoid universal accessory assumptions.
Quote the finished installation
Include assessment, any approved adapter and the labor needed to access the system equipment. Compare that complete scope with other suitable options rather than treating the thermostat’s shelf price as the project total.
