Guest Playback: How to Let Visitors Control Music Without Exposing Home Controls

A guest bedroom without an app lesson

A typical weekend‑visitor moment

John is staying over for a Friday night. He wants to stream a playlist from his phone in the guest bedroom, but he doesn’t need – and shouldn’t have – the ability to change the living‑room volume, edit the Sonos groups, or invoke voice assistants that could control lights.

What the platform actually offers

  • Bluetooth – Both the Era 100 and Era 300 expose a standard Bluetooth LE audio profile. Pairing a phone gives the guest control only over the speaker they are connected to; the rest of the Sonos network stays untouched.
  • AirPlay 2 – For iOS users, AirPlay 2 streams directly to the selected speaker without requiring the Sonos app. It behaves the same way as Bluetooth – isolated playback.
  • Sonos app sharing – Adding a guest’s account in the Sonos app would hand them full system control (room grouping, volume sync, voice‑assistant access). Since there is no “guest‑only” mode, this option does not meet the decision criteria.

Conditional buying judgement

Choose a Bluetooth‑enabled speaker (Era 100 or Era 300) if you want a plug‑and‑play guest experience that limits control to the single device. Turn on Bluetooth, leave the speaker in pairing mode, and give the visitor a short instruction: “Open Bluetooth settings, select ‘Sonos Era 100’ and start playing.”

Alternative when Bluetooth isn’t desired

If you prefer to keep the speaker permanently on the Wi‑Fi network, set up a dedicated AirPlay 2 endpoint in the guest room and share the room’s name only. The visitor can stream from any Apple device without ever opening the Sonos app, preserving the rest of the house from accidental changes.

Responsibility checklist

  • Homeowner: enable Bluetooth (or AirPlay 2) before the guest arrives, ensure the speaker is not part of a multi‑room group that would affect other zones.
  • Guest: connect only via Bluetooth/AirPlay and avoid opening the Sonos app.

This approach gives the visitor exactly the playback controls they need while keeping all other household functions out of reach.
