When a Translated Brochure Is Not Enough for Your Installers

Blackout curtains with local control

Imagine you receive Pack A – a two‑page PDF that was originally a sales flyer, now translated into French. It lists the product’s headline features, a single block diagram of the overall system, and a bullet list of “quick‑start steps.” No part numbers, no wiring schematics, and the revision date is missing.

Next to it is Pack B – a 12‑page installation guide produced for the exact model you plan to mount. It contains exploded‑view drawings, a table that maps every connector to its function, terminology that matches the firmware UI, and a clear revision stamp (e.g., Rev 3.2, 2024‑09). The language is also French, but the content depth is far greater.

Conditional buying judgement

  • Use Pack A only if the device is a true plug‑and‑play unit (e.g., a Wi‑Fi outlet that requires no wiring, no firmware configuration, and the crew already knows the standard mounting method). In that narrow case the marketing sheet’s high‑level steps plus a quick video can get the job done without a full manual.
  • Insist on Pack B for every other scenario – anything that involves custom wiring, integration with a hub, firmware version checks, or safety‑critical mounting (locks, shades, lighting circuits). The extra diagrams prevent mis‑connections, the terminology aligns the crew’s language with the on‑device UI, and the revision stamp guarantees they are not following obsolete steps.

Alternative approach If the supplier only offers the marketing sheet, request a technical addendum: a concise, model‑specific sheet that includes at least one wiring diagram, part numbers, and the current revision number. Ask that it be reviewed by a bilingual engineer before it is handed to the crew. This middle ground saves you from waiting for a full 50‑page manual while still providing the critical details your installers need.

In short, language is a baseline, not a finish line. Match the document depth to the complexity of the installation, and you’ll avoid costly re‑work or on‑site confusion.
