Should You Add a Second Smart‑Home System?

A small set of everyday scenes

If the first system is already running smoothly, the first question is protocol compatibility. Devices that speak the same language (Zigbee, Matter, Wi‑Fi, etc.) can usually be adopted into the existing hub and managed from the same app. The operational impact is limited to a few extra screens in the app and a marginal increase in firmware updates. In that case, extending the platform is the simplest path – you keep one account, one set of notifications, and a single support channel.

A second system becomes sensible when the new devices require a different protocol or cloud service that the current hub cannot bridge. For example, a premium security camera that only works with its own cloud, or a legacy lighting controller that needs a proprietary bridge. Adding such a device to the first hub would either overload it or force you to run a workaround that introduces latency and extra points of failure. Here the operational cost is not just another app; it’s an additional login, separate firmware schedule, and a distinct troubleshooting workflow. If you anticipate regular interaction with those devices (e.g., daily video reviews, custom automations), the extra effort may be justified.

Conditional buying judgment – choose a separate system only if the new devices cannot be reliably integrated, or if they demand a dedicated cloud that you must monitor independently. Otherwise, stay with the original platform and add the devices as extensions.

Alternative approach – before committing to a second hub, explore a bridge or gateway that can translate between protocols (e.g., a Matter‑compatible bridge). If the bridge can expose the new devices to your existing app, you avoid the overhead of a whole new account while still meeting technical requirements. In any case, agree upfront with the installer or integrator on who will manage the extra account, how updates will be coordinated, and which party will handle post‑sale support for each system.
